“I now come back as ambassador, but I look back to those months I spent in the Midwest, which gave me a feel for America that has sustained my interest in this country over the decades.”
Ambassador Daniel Mulhall first visited the U.S. in 1974 as a J-1 participant in Kansas City. After serving as Ireland's Ambassador to the U.K. (2013-17), he became the Irish Ambassador to the U.S. in August of 2017.
"I came to America first in the summer of 1974 on a J-1 visa. At that time I was a student in Ireland, and it was the first time outside of my country. I came here, I spent 3 months in Kansas City, and it gave me a whole insight into America. I've retained those images of America from those days very strongly over the years and decades that have gone in between. I now come back as ambassador, but I look back to those months I spent in the Midwest, which gave me a feel for America that has sustained my interest in this country over the decades. It's wonderful to be back here now as Ambassador, having started my journey here as a J-1 back in 1974."
